Looking for a developmental editor for your fiction project?

There are many incredible fiction editors out there—some of whom I’ve used for my own fiction! When looking for a developmental editor, it’s just as important to find the right person for your story as it is to find someone knowledgeable. Every editor brings their own unique experience, understanding of the craft, and personal preferences to the table—myself included.

Am I a good fit for you and your novel?

My background includes musical theater, theology, and ethics. In addition to a certificate in developmental editing from the Editorial Freelancers Association, I’ve been studying the craft of writing fiction for ten years and have written several novels. I specialize in story analysis with an emphasis on Christian ethics.

My debut non-fiction book releases in July—On Magic and Miracles: A Theological Guide to Discerning Fictional Magic. I also write on the topic of story ethics, imagination, and parenting for Lorehaven.com. My other articles regarding fiction or story ethics are published through WORLD Magazine and Desiring God.

My editorial services are best suited for writers looking for feedback and assistance with story development as well as ethics and/or Christian theology. I don’t read books that contain sex or moderate to severe sensuality; i.e. no “steamy” or “spicy” content. (See note at the bottom of this page for a definition of sensuality in fiction.) I also ask that you do not send a first draft but only polished manuscripts.

What you can expect from me.

A developmental edit from me includes feedback on all the big-picture story elements:

  • Plot

  • Character arcs

  • Prose/voice

  • Story structure

  • Theme

  • Worldbuilding

  • Dialogue

  • Point-of-view

In addition to these, I can also analyze your story ethics from a Christian perspective. This may include a biblical analysis of the magic system, sexuality, violence, emotional and/or spiritual manipulation, glorification of evil, and more.

*Note: I define sensuality as descriptions of bodily “senses” of attraction and/or arousal. This means “showing” and not “telling” that a person is attracted or aroused through touching and/or kissing using descriptions of external and internal bodily sensations.
